December 5-7, 2014

December 6, 2014

Date(s): December 5 thru 7, 2014
Attendees: Mike Cerruti, Lee Owens, Christopher Owens, Jimbo Sadler

Harvest: Mike hunted from the box blind in the New Field on Friday afternoon and saw three coyotes. He missed the biggest yote at about 3pm, but connected with this smaller (32lb, so still good size) coyote at about 4.45pm from ~165 yards with his .270. We’ve seen more coyote on the trail cameras this year and it’s time to thin them out a bit.

Nobody saw game Saturday morning, and the rain Saturday afternoon kept things pretty quiet.

Other wildlife sightings:

  • Mike saw ‘bro and sis’ in the Big Field on Saturday afternoon

Projects Included:

  • Installed supports under the joists in the front section of the first floor in anticipation of a heavy item to be delivered next week

Family Thanksgiving, 2014

December 1, 2014

Date(s): November 26 thru 30, 2014

The Cerruti clan spent a few days around Thanksgiving at SRF. Jennifer brought Landon down for his first hunt armed with the famous Daisy BB gun. We hunted the New Field for a couple of hours and had two deer come out despite the over active 5 year in the box. Hunting was cut short right at prime time by a call from nature which could not be denied. Landon did great for his first hunt. He also did a great job listening and being safe with his rifle. Way to go!

Uncle George came up after Thanksgiving and was an amazing help diagnosing and fixing the solar system issue as well as identifying how to fix the hot water heater problems. For that help we fed some lasagna and pizza. Great deal for one of us! He did have some time to throw some lead showing us all how it’s done.

Opening of Firearms Season, 2014

November 18, 2014

Date(s): November 14 thru 17, 2014
Attendees: Mike Cerruti, Hugh Shytle, Herb Coleman, Lee Owens and Jimbo Sadler

While we saw some deer, we were blanked during the firearms opener in 2014. Moreover, in stark contrast to the muzzleloader trip, we didn’t see a single bear (though there were lots of bear pix on the trail cameras).

The Big Field continued to have the most sightings, though several of those were these two young deer we dubbed ‘Bro and Sis’.

October 30, 2014

Attendees: Mike Cerruti, Hugh Shytle, Herb Coleman, Dave Sterling

Harvest: Dave Sterling connected with a real nice 9pt buck from the box stand in the New field

Other than Dave’s nice buck, the big story for this trip was the bear encounters. When we checked the cameras, a bear had taken down the ground blind in the Bonus Field (see animated gif below, click for larger). Later, Hugh had three bear sightings (although it could be seeing the same bear three times) one of which was before first light in and around the New Field. Later, a bear tore up the seat of the Bad Boy buggy and later put its paws on the ladder of the Redneck blind in the New Field while Mike was in the blind!.
